What Does Good Web Design Mean?

Web design is a broad term that is not limited to the aesthetic appearance of a website. It also encompasses the design of the user interface, graphic design, the development of proprietary software (for certain types of websites), as well as search engine optimisation. It generally abides by a somewhat universally-accepted set of standards. What’s considered to be good web design offerd by experts in web design in Cornwall is not that different from what web designers would consider as good design in other parts of the world.

This post will not go into the details of what  good web design is. Instead, it will highlight four of the most important attributes of a website that can be considered good or excellent.

More than half of those who use the internet access websites through mobile devices. As such, it only makes sense to design websites that work well on the smaller display of smartphones, tablet computers, and other mobile devices. As much as possible, a website should use a responsive web design. This design makes it unnecessary to come up with a separate mobile version of a site since responsive websites automatically adjust their layout and the amount of content they display when accessed using a mobile device.

Responsiveness or Page Loading Time

Speed affects the success of a website or an online store. The time it takes for a page to load can make or break a site. The slower it gets, the less likely a site visitor will want to go into the rest of the pages of a site. Slow loading sites or online stores are unlikely to gain repeat visitors or customers. Faster is always better when it comes to websites. That’s why websites should be properly optimised to achieve the fastest page loading time possible.

Ease of Use

In addition to speed, it’s also very important for a website to be easy to navigate or use. The navigation buttons should be conspicuously positioned. It should be easy moving from one page to another. The links and buttons should be easy to distinguish. Ads, if there are any, should not be distractive. It’s not advisable to overload a page with content. Move content to a new page if it is already making the page look cluttered or if it distracts visitors from what you want them to see on a page.

Aesthetic Appeal

Of course, the aesthetics also matter. There should be tasteful use of images and colours. Good design does not look boring despite being minimalistic or simple. It should be distinctive and unlike what most other sites on the web look like. A website’s appearance forms part of its identity, so it’s important to also pay attention to how your website looks.

Good web design is sometimes something you may not be able to explain. There are websites you believe to be well designed simply because you think it is after going over it. Good design is a confluence of different factors that create a good user experience and a distinctive appeal.
